Overcoming Writers Block

As writers we have all experienced it at one time or another. You stare at a blank page, the cursor blinks and your brain does the same. Blink.
Blank.

You’re not in the mood. You’re distracted. The pressure is on because that deadline – even if it is self-imposed – creeps ever closer.

Then the dogs start barking, the magpies declare war on the crows outside your window and that little devil taps you on the shoulder, ‘Maybe you should wait for a better moment. Go do the laundry / mow the lawn / shop for that new pair of jeans you need… you’re just wasting time here anyway.

I have read so much advice on this it makes my head spin, but I have just one thing to say: Ignore That Voice!

If you quit every time something distracts you, you will never finish. You may never even start.
Learn to accept that there is probably a good reason behind your current state of blankness, but you don’t have to work through all of your childhood issues before you can one day, finally, sit down and bang out that novel/movie/play you have always wanted to write.

Rather, find a way to write anyway. My latest trick? Change my background music, move seating positions and switch to writing by hand rather than typing.

You would be surprised at how small changes can unlock the flow of creativity.
