How do you get tens of thousands of people to fall silent?
Hand Rob Thomas a microphone and a guitar and let him sing one of his acoustic songs, such as the beautiful ‘I Will‘ from the new Matchbox Twenty album, North.
Even right up near the back of the stands his magical voice seemed to reach inside to hug my heart and wrap my soul in a shroud of bliss. You guessed it; on Saturday night I was privileged and overjoyed to go see my favourite band in action.
Writing is an outlet. You lose yourself among your story and your characters and pour yourself onto the page… yes, you know what I’m talking about. But, as with most things, there needs to be balance.
You cannot have output without input; any creative person knows that you need to regularly top up your levels of creativity otherwise the act of creating will suck you dry. It is the basis of Julia Cameron’s “artist dates” in The Artist’s Way – a brilliant book, by the way, should you ever find yourself creatively stumped.
One of the things that tops me up, so to speak, is music and of course I have my favourites. There is a particular song that I play over and over whenever I need some, er, romantic inspiration. What can I say? It moves me.
But there’s nothing quite like a live concert to get the juices flowing and Matchbox Twenty have been rocking my boat for years. Here’s hoping they do so for many years to come.
Thanks, lads. Come back soon xx
