Angels in Blue

Recent events inspired me to write this little piece of flash fiction just in time for Christmas. . .

I wait impatiently for a family to buckle into their SUV. A giant angel mocks me, but I’m not the one suspended over the mall’s entrance, lit up like Christmas. I believed in angels once, but too many plastic Christmases have jaded me. I reckon the angels are with the Dodos now, if they ever existed at all.

The SUV backs out and I quickly take its place. Hot, humid air chases in the instant I open the car door. I hurry towards the mall, turning to watch the lights blink as I press the remote lock button. My mistake. Walking backwards, I trip and fall. My back jars as I land butt first, then with a deafening thwack my head hits the concrete. Stunned, momentarily blinded by pain and unable to move I see stars, but no angels.

Urgent voices surround me. I try to reassure but no, I am not okay. I am hurt and I am terrified. The mall angel mocks from the edge of my swimming vision, then the lights change colour and start flashing. Two paramedics kneel beside me.

They prod, they poke, they shine lights in my eyes. One checks blood pressure, the other pries: What’s your name? What day is it?

‘Christmas Eve,’ I mumble and he smiles.

He sits beside me on the way to Emergency, making notes and giving comfort. I understand now. These two wear blue and drive an ambulance. I’ll be okay now, knowing the angels are still here.
